Ym mis Medi, ymwelais a Chastell Caerffili gyda fy nheulu.

Mae’n gastell drawiadol iawn, y castell mwyaf yng Nghymru.  Dywedir mai Cymru yw’r wlad gyda’r nifer fwyaf o gestyll bob milltir sgwar yn Ewrop.  Felly, os ydych am weld cestyll, dyma’r lle i ddod!

Mae Caerffili heddiw yn dref fychan, tua 5 milltir i’r gogledd o Gaerdydd, prifddinas Cymru.  Mae’r castell bron yn llyncu’r dref.  Mae’n gastell enfawr gyda thwr sy’n gogwyddo, ffos a waliau o fewn waliau.  Mae’n amhosib meddwl am Gaerffili heb ddychmygu’r castell aruthrol yma.

Adeiladwyd y castell yn 1268.  Gilbert de Clare oedd y dyn tu ol i’r castell yma, ac ynghyd a sicrhau’r castell fel caer effeithiol a diogel, roedd sawl ystafell foethus yna hefyd. Roedd Gilbert yn elyn i dywysogion Cymru. Pan gafodd tywysog Cymru, Llywelyn ein Llyw Olaf, ei drechu gan y brenin Edward I, newidiodd pwrpas y castell.  Erbyn i Marcwis Bute brynu’r castell yn 1776, roedd y castell mewn adfeilion.  Bu i’r marcwis achub y castell, ac erbyn hyn, mae Cadw yn rhedeg y castell fel atyniad i dwristiaid.

Mwynheuais fy ymweliad yn fawr.  Rwyf yn bwriadu dysgu rhagor am Gilbert de Clare a gweddill cestyll De Cymru…

In September, I visited Caerphilly Castle with my family.

It’s a very striking castle, the largest in Wales.  It is said that Wales is the country with the most castles per square mile in Europe.  So, if you want to see castles, this is the place to come!

Caerphilly is a small town, about 5 miles north of Cardiff, the capital of Wales.  The castle almost swallows the town.  It’s a huge building with a leaning tower, a moat and walls within walls.  It’s impossible to imagine Caerphilly without this colossal castle.

The castle was built in 1268.  Gilbert de Clare is the name of the man behind it, and as well as securing it as a safe and effective fortress, there were also several luxurious rooms within.  Gilbert was an enemy to the princes of Wales.  When the Prince of Wales, Llywelyn the Last, was defeated by the English king, Edward I, the purpose of the castle changed.  By the time the Marquis of Bute bought the castle in 1776, it was in ruins.  The marquis saved the castle, and by now, Cadw runs it as a tourist attraction.

I enjoyed my visit very much.  I now intend to learn more about Gilbert de Clare and other castles in South Wales…
